Our internationally active office devotes itself to the planning and construction of buildings in the health care, research and social housing sectors, as well as town planning for the private and public sectors.
Our goal is to create modern buildings which positively boost working and living spaces. To us, architecture means understanding and ordering things whilst focusing upon people. To a large extent, the designs of Nickl & Partner are based upon the actions and needs of people who work, live and receive health care there. Their wellbeing in addition to the perfection, functional interplay of flexible spatial designs and exciting materials is our key concern when performing our work.
We rank among the leading architect’s offices in Germany in the fields of medical facilities, clinics and research institutes.
The team has increased to number more than 100 architects since the foundation in 1979. Clients from health care, research and urban planning fields have entrusted us worldwide.
Hospital - a livable place
Our design for a hospital environment is for a place where people can engage in communication, real analogue communication, supported by digital media where data can complement words. In this environment, patients and staff meet on one level, as equals. There are no virtual or physical boundaries, no partitioned offices, and colleagues meet spontaneously and informally. Patients and relatives are confronted not by locked doors, but by the everyday living reality of the hospital. Instead of dark corridors, there are spaces that flow into one another. There are bright, open meeting areas, private spaces, landscaped outdoor areas, and quiet places for work. But all have one thing in common: they are part of an environment. High-tech areas where people’s lives are saved are modules within a greater whole. The greater the level of technology, the more space for preparation and conversation. The Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital in Vienna is a step towards this vision.

The winning design in a 2008 international competition provided for a development plan that revived the original idea of a hospital in a park. A clear urban structure was developed for the tradition-steeped hospital as part of further consolidation and optimisation. It harmonises with the existing buildings and creates a legible relationship to the city. Transparency and openness should signal the building to the outside. Intimacy and protection from prying eyes, are required from the inside.

Roof gardens connect to form a park landscape that brings the quality of the outdoor space into the interior and is also usable by the entire district. Thus, interior and outdoor space is merged, while also satisfying the highest functional demands. All patient rooms are located on the exterior façade with optimal daylight and views. Interior courtyards separate the respective functional areas and provide the internal spaces and, most importantly, staff working spaces with ample daylight.
Central staircase Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hospital in Vienna
The central staircase is the geographical and organizational center of the building. It is naturally lit through all levels with the help of the patios. It connects all floors with one another and is crowned in complete size in the roof of a skylight. The middle of the Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital thus becomes a bright, transparent place as a central reference point of the building.
